Desi Kitchen Toor Dal 2 lb is premium split pigeon peas — the most widely consumed dal in Indian households. With a mild earthiness, golden color and comforting richness, toor dal is the essential base for classic sambhar, Gujarati dal and everyday yellow dal tadka. Available at Anora's Cash N Carry in Los Angeles.

Features of Desi Kitchen Toor Dal 2 lb

    • Premium split pigeon peas (toor/arhar dal) — clean, sorted and uniform
    • Rich, earthy flavor — the backbone of South Indian sambhar and North Indian dal tadka
    • High in protein, fiber and B vitamins
    • 2 lb pack — the everyday size for regular Indian household cooking

    How to Cook

Rinse 1 cup of toor dal and soak for 20–30 minutes if time allows. Pressure cook with 2.5 cups water and a pinch of turmeric for 3–4 whistles until completely soft and smooth. For dal tadka: prepare a tadka of ghee, cumin, mustard seeds, onion, tomato, ginger and garlic. Add to the cooked dal and simmer. For sambhar: add tamarind water, sambhar powder, vegetables and curry leaves to cooked toor dal.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between toor dal and chana dal? Toor dal (split pigeon peas) cooks to a softer, more liquid consistency ideal for dal and sambhar. Chana dal (split Bengal gram) holds its shape better and is used in drier preparations and chutneys.

Why does my toor dal take a long time to cook? Oily or waxed toor dal (a common preservation method) takes longer to soften. Soak for 30–60 minutes and pressure cook for 4–5 whistles. Look for non-oily toor dal for faster cooking.

Can toor dal be used for making Gujarati dal? Yes — sweet-sour Gujarati dal is made from toor dal cooked with jaggery, tamarind, tomato and whole spices for a distinctive sweet-sour-spicy flavor.
